Honestly, I must say I don't remember the exact year and month when this happened, or what belt color I was... but I do know it was sometime around 1992, so I stuck the strip to a date and year just for archival purposes. That there is my admired Sensei, Gerardo Balves, now residing in Canada, and one of the greatest karate practitioners ever to be born in Uruguay.

And those on the all are Okinawan kobudo weapons, which are mostly derived from agricultural or fishing tools. Popular belief claims that Okinawan farming tools evolved into weapons due to restrictions placed upon the peasants by the Satsuma samurai clan when the island was made a part of Japan, which forbade them from carrying arms. As a result, it is said, they were defenseless and developed a fighting system around their traditional farming implements. However, modern martial arts scholars have been unable to find historical backing for this story, and the evidence uncovered by various martial historians points to the Pechin Warrior caste in Okinawa as being those who practiced and studied various martial arts, rather than the Heimin, or commoner. It is true that Okinawans, under the rule of foreign powers, were prohibited from carrying weapons or practicing with them in public, and thus adapted their fighting style to use farming and fishing tools in lieu of actual weapons.

Yes, I did copy most of the above from Wikipedia to save me from typing it. And yes, my question about the oar was stupid, and if you want, you can call it "eku". Now, it's Friday, and although it has nothing to do with the strip, this song was released in 1992, so let's listen to "Friday I'm In Love", by The Cure.
