My son was three when he asked me what "soviet" meant. And now, at fourteen and a half, he's a WWI and WWII scholar of sorts, interested in history all-around, but he's not a commie (I think). But apart from all that, he's very artistically talented, and his favorite art is music. He did take recorder lessons in school, and he has general music lessons now in high school, but he also plays the ukulele (which he learned with a phone app and web resources), the keyboard (he learned on his own), and also owns a harmonica... which he doesn't play much, and has been sitting on my nightstand for months, abandoned.

He now wants a guitar or a pair of bongos... hmm... he might want to become a beatnik poet... We should have sent him to actual lessons for something other than the recorder, but schedules are hectic; we'll probably get him some lessons for the guitar if he gets one.

Music this week is "Rossiya", from Laibach's 2006 album "Volk", and it's inspired by the anthems of the USSR and the Russian Federation, as well as the International:
